Cod liver oil is used for many years to protect the body by strengthening the immune system and for therapeutic purposes. Its use began in northern Europe, in countries where the cold and lack of sun needed greater protection, and the extraction is carried from the liver of cod fish.

Special precautions – Side effects

The cod liver oil consumption in the correct proportions is generally safe. If you maintain a diet rich in oily fish and vegetables, you will likely not need cod liver oil supplement, although the consumption will certainly benefit you.

Over-consumption of cod liver oil can cause low blood pressure, nausea and block blood clotting. During pregnancy always consult your personal doctor. If you take anticoagulants or you are on medication for high blood pressure, avoid cod liver oil consumption in any form.

Most supplements have synthetic additives which should be avoided. Prefer tested supplement companies, which usually contain antioxidants that protect the oil from oxidation. The best form to trust, is the oil but consumption is difficult because of the intense smell and taste.

Do not buy flavored cod liver oil supplements, but dissolve the oil in juice, yogurt or whatever pleases you to disguise the taste of the oil. Each company has different proportions of fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin A, so for correct dosage, follow the instructions.
