Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus globulus
Eucalyptus may not be a herb, but it provides many therapeutic properties and benefits for the body, both for mental health and physical health.
Eucalyptus of the globulus variety contains alcohols, phenols, esters, ketones, oxides, aldehydes, terpenes and essential oil. Because of ketones and phenols, the use of eucalyptus is not recommended for children, with the exception of the radiata variety which does not contain the above ingredients and makes use safe.
Eucalyptus is very good antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal, making it particularly effective in cases of injuries, skin infections and burns as it leaves a feeling of coolness to the skin. Another reason that makes it ideal for wound healing is the balsamic and hemostatic action. It is antiviral and therefore protects against viral infections and is effective in cases of flu and simple cold. Eucalyptus helps to opens sinuses, while faces signs in cases of measles and chicken pox.
The main feature of eucalyptus is the particular protection and healing that it offers to the respiratory system. It is effective in infections of the throat, sinusitis and it relieves cough. It is expectorant and releases breathing in cases of dyspnoea, bronchitis and pneumonia. Generally eucalyptus due to its anti-inflammatory activity is particularly effective in inflammation of the respiratory tract.
Another action of eucalyptus is its sweating and antipyretic action, making it effective in cases of persistent fever. Generally it protects the immune system from diseases and viruses.
Due to its anti-inflammatory effect, eucalyptus is effective in cases of joint pain. Combined with its antispasmodic and analgesic action, it is suitable for cases of insect bites, headaches, migraines, muscular pains and arthritis.
In cases of skin diseases, it effectively acts against psoriasis, herpes, treats pimples and removes lice. External is also used to treat pains from bruises.
The eucalyptus infusion is a diuretic that protects the liver and kidney function. Eucalyptus has shown good results in the treatment of diabetes, and is widely used in cases of otitis, nasal and oral infections but also gingivitis. It is effective in urinary tract infections and diarrhea. It also helps a lot in the treatment of varicose veins.
In aromatherapy, eucalyptus is used to deal with strong, persistent headaches for the mental enhancement of those suffering from a lack of self-confidence, those who suffer from exhaustion, emotional tension, difficulty concentrating, frequent mood swings and frequent anger explosions. Eucalyptus essential oil has a very strong insect-repellent effect, disinfects hands and protects against allergies.
It needs special attention in cases of high blood pressure, asthma and epilepsy. Use in children is not recommended.
