St John’s wort – Hypericum Perforatum

St John’s wort is a great herb of Greek nature, with many beneficial properties. Antispasmodics, antipyretics, analgesics, diuretics and natural antidepressants are just some of the many properties that we will mention.

The most important offer of St John’s wort has to do with mental function and beneficial action in human psychology. Despite its hemostatic effect in external use, the consumption of tincture or infusion of St John’s wort, helps in amenorrhea, as a natural emmenagogue. In the same way, it promotes the proper and orderly functioning of the circulatory system, protecting the heart from diseases. It is important to note that another beneficial property of St John’s wort, especially for the heart, is its contribution to lowering cholesterol and its strong antioxidant action can not be ruled out.

Its natural analgesic action makes it ideal for treating pain, in a wide range of uses. Its main use as a painkiller is the oil for massaging painful areas. The warmed St John’s wort oil in drops is ideal for treating earache. Muscle or joint massages relieve immediately, while its use is recommended for the treatment of migraines, arthritic pains, nerve and muscle grips, for rheumatic pains, varicose veins, sciatica, and even menstrual pains. It is also believed, but not proven, to prevent Parkinson’s disease.

St John’s wort also benefits the respiratory system, with its antispasmodic properties. It treats persistent cough, is a natural sedative where it helps with asthma and bronchitis, and its use is generally recommended for the treatment of respiratory disorders. In case of cold with severe symptoms of cough and fever, its use is particularly effective, because it combines its antispasmodic, sedative and antipyretic action.

The use of St John’s wort needs special care, so that the skin does not come in contact with the sun after using its oil. It is photosensitive, which means it can cause skin irritation and blemishes. Finally, extensive use has side effects so it should not exceed the normal quantities.
