Crocus (saffron) – Crocus Sativus

Crocus is one of the most expensive herbs in the world, while one of the best varieties is produced exclusively in Greece. The reasons why it is considered one of the best herbs and spices in the world, are many and important.

In addition to the wonderful taste and golden color it offers to the food, it is one of the most powerful antioxidants. It strengthens the body’s defenses, while the supply of saffron to the heart and cardiovascular system is invaluable. It is anticoagulant, helps reduce bad cholesterol, stimulates heart function and increases blood circulation as a natural anticoagulant. It contributes significantly to the prevention of diabetes, and the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. Its strong antioxidant action protects against the formation of cancer cells and their proliferation.

In addition, saffron contributes to the healthy functioning of the brain, enhances memory, and has been shown to protect against degenerative brain diseases such as Altzheimer and dementia. On a spiritual and psychological level, it is considered an effective sedative and fights irritability and stress. Stimulates brain function, fights mental fatigue and offers clarity.

In relation to the digestive and urinary system, crocus has beneficial uses such as treating gastritis and colic as a natural analgesic, stimulates digestive function and stomach, while it is a natural antispasmodic and diuretic.
The antiseptic action of saffron, in combination with the emollient make it useful for the treatment of toothache, arthritis pain, mouth ulcers and inflammation of the oral cavity, while it is a very good emmenagogue and reliever of period pains.

Regarding the reproductive system, saffron is considered to enhance male fertility, while regulating the female cycle, relieving the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. It has been used as a powerful aphrodisiac since ancient times.
It is worth mentioning that while it does not have any other recognized beneficial properties related to the respiratory system, it is considered to treat and can cure asthma.

Of course, like most herbs, saffron needs attention in its use. People suffering from liver or kidney diseases should avoid the use of saffron. Doses higher than recommended are highly toxic, and extensive use can be addictive. It should not be consumed during pregnancy and lactation other than limited use in cooking.
